Hall of Fame
"The following is an excerpt from a poem which appeared in the Journal Star paper around 1952-53, and was contributed by Harry Good,
University of Nebraska Basketball Coach. Author unknown.
Wake up, young man, wake up there boy, today is the day you play.
We're sure
you'll win but hold up that chin if the
breaks go the other way.
It matters not that you win or lose as long as you play the game; with heart and soul you have
reached the goal in the Family's Hall of Fame."
In addition to the Family Hall of Fame, Dad is a member of the Hall of Fame for the following:
On April 24, 1977, he was elected to the Varsity Athletics Hall of Fame for Nebraska Wesleyan University. "Weyand, a four-year football letterman at NWU,
coached Bethany to a state basketball championship before moving to Lincoln High for the 1941-42 season."
May 25, 1983, he was inducted into the Lincoln High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The article in the program for the banquet contained this excerpt, "Lyle Weyand held a master's hand at Lincoln High through the 1950's. His 283-73 winning margin is unexcelled, winning state championships in 1941-42, 1942-43, 1945-46 (undefeated state champions), 1957-58 and 1958-59 (undefeated state champions)".
On September 30, 2001, he was inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame. As a family we were overjoyed at the honor and very sad. Dad died in 1996 and did not get to receive this award personally. A bitter-sweet pill for all of us. The notification letter was sent to brother Joe. A quote from the opening paragraph, "It is my pleasure to announce to you that the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame has chosen Lyle Weyand in the induction class of 2001, an honor we believe is the ultimate in recognition in high school sports in the State of Nebraska."
