Mom and Dad

My mother was Darlene (Holtgrewe) Weyand. She was born on September 18, 1917, in Hubbel, Nebraska, and died on November 16, 2009, in Alma, Nebraska and is buried at the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.

Mom attended school in Daykin, Nebraska, and graduated from Daykin High School in 1935. She worked as a telephone operator until her marriage.

My dad was Lyle Edwin Weyand. He was born on February 27, 1909, in Octavia, Nebraska and died on August 21, 1996, in Lincoln, Nebraska. He is buried at the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.

Dad attended school in Lincoln, Nebraska, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1929. He attended Cotner College and transferred to Wesleyan where he graduated in 1934.

My mom and dad were married on August 15, 1937,

Darlene was a homemaker the majority of her married life. In the mid-1950's, she clerked in the Miller and Paine store in downtown Lincoln and worked her way up to manager of her department. Later she clerked in a Maternity Shop. She left the work force in 1958.

Lyle was a teacher and a coach. After he and Darlene were married, his first teaching and coaching job was at Bethany High School. The school is gone now and Bethany is a part of Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1940, he was hired to teach and coach at Lincoln High School. He retired from coaching in 1959 and from teaching in 1974.

Mother wrote a poem about their time together titled "Togetherness"

Hand in hand down through the years
Sharing happiness
Sharing tears.

Have we made our life worth while?
Sharing a laugh?
Giving a smile?

How many more years will He give?
For us to love,
For us to live?
