Sherman Field Baseball Diamond
Sherman Field is located at First and South Street. Construction started in late 1946. The roof and the lights were added in early April of 1947, and the stadium was ready for the first home game in May. The Lincoln A's, a member of the Western League and a farm club of the Philadelphia Athletics, played their home games at Sherman Field.
The Lincoln A's baseball team was really popular for awhile and can boast of a few well-known players. Bob got to meet them all. Nelly Fox led the Western League in hits for Lincoln in 1948. The 20 year old second baseman was promoted to the Philadelphia Athletics at the end of the season. In 1950 he was sold to the White Sox. Nelly Fox is in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. Bobby Shantz was 18-7 for Lincoln in 1948. He went on to be the MVP in the American League in 1952. The pitcher, Mason Bowes, was rehabbing with the Lincoln A's. He asked Bob to catch for him. Bob reported, "My knees were shaking, and it looked like that ball was coming 100 miles an hour."
